Economic Globalisation

Economic Globalisation

This business began in 1940,with a restaurant opened by brothers Dick and Mac Mcdonald in San Bernadino,California.Year by year, they start to enter different markets in the world.
Now,McDonald's is the largest chain of fast food restaurants in the world. It has more than 31,000 outlets worldwide.

The group of people affected by this economic globalisation of McDonald's are mainly the consumers. It is changing their lifestyles. One example is the "drive-thru"service which allows drivers to buy meals while waiting in the car, making it more convenient for them.
In addition,to accomodate to the current trend for high quality coffee and popularity of coffee shops in general, McDonald's introduced McCafe, which has allowed consumers to enjoy coffee while savouring fast food.

In my opinion, this form of globalisation has a positive impact on Singapore's society.Critiques may feel that such fast-food restaurants are the root cause of the increasing obesity rate in Singapore, but i do not agree.MacDonald's has provided a list of nutrition information on the tray that is being served. Thus, consumers can decide for themselves what type of food they should or should not consume based on the given information. In addition,MacDonald's also sell healthier alternatives such as salads, corns and milk.As such, those who are health conscious are not "deterred" from the fast-food restaurants. Therefore,McDonald's should not be blamed for the obesity rate in Singapore,as consumers have the responsibility to take care of their own health.

Furthermore, this type of economic globalisation has help to provide large scale job opportunities in Singapore.Teenagers are able to gain work experience while working in McDonald's and the elderly are able to provide for themselves, doing simple jobs in the restaurants. There are also skills upgrading programmes provided by the management of McDonald's for their workers, making them more value-added.Thus,this form of globalisation has help to increase the quality of our labour force in the economy.

  1. I agree to a large extend that fast-food resturant should not be blame for the increasing rate of obesity in singapore. This is becase people has a choice whether to eat macdonalds anot. however, i feel that the nutrition facts provided by macdonalds may not be accurate. Besides, the facts maybe fabricated to attract more customers, hence the information might not be reliable.

Besides, even if there are healthier alternatives provided by macdonalds, consumers will not be interested in them as other food item will taste better and more appetizing as compared to milk, or corn.

hence, i feel that macdonalds should be blame to a small extend.

  2. I agree that due to globalisation, fast food restaurants popularity has increased exponentially around the world, although i do not really explain why the form of globalisation is economic globalisation. also in my opinion, i don't think the introduction of McCafe in McDonalds is due to an increasing popularity in high quality coffee or coffee shops, but because an influx in business meetings in our busy world. since business men or women like to meet at Starbucks or the coffee bean, to be more competitive, therefore mcdonalds introduce McCafe to gain better business.

I agree to a small extent that mcdonalds should not be blamed for the rising obesity rate in Singapore. This is because due to such an increase in popularity of fast food restaurants, people are much more inclined to consume fast food than other healthier alternatives, since globalisation has caused fast food to be all around us further emphasizing convenience, therefore people will prefer to consume fast food than move a further distance for a healthier alternatives. even with the introduction of healthier alternatives like salads or putting up nutritional values, a small percentage of people consume the salads, or are too busy in their own business deals or own conservation as people have become too busy to sit down and read these values in detail. therefore this has then contributed to obesity in singapore

  3. Nutrition facts given by McDonald does not cover all the food and beverages they serve. For example, you do not see the nutrition facts of a double McSpicy burger around. Afterall, McDonald is still a profit driven company which care less about their consumers being obese.
